There are other ways to clean an oven other than self-clean. Making a simple baking soda solution may be the solution to your oven grime without using store-bought cleaner that leaves chemical fumes behind.

All you need is:

  • 1/2 Cup of Baking Soda
  • 3-4 Tablespoons of Water
  • White Vinegar
  • Gloves and Dish Cloth
  1. Empty Oven: Remove all oven racks, baking stones and even the oven door if  it is easily removable.
  2. Baking Soda Solution: Mix baking soda and water in a small bowl until it forms a spreadable paste. Spread the paste on any stains or grime inside your oven. (Gloves come in hand for this step).
  3. Give it some time: Let the solution sit for around 10 hours, or overnight. This will allow the paste time to absorb the stains. The solution will  turn a brownish color as it cleans.
  4. Clean accessories: Clean all the pieces you removed from the oven: racks, baking stones, oven thermometer, etc…
  5. Wipe away the paste: After leaving the solution to do its work, dampen a dish cloth and use it to wipe out the dried baking soda.
  6. Tough Spots: Spray some vinegar on any tough spots to activate the baking soda.  If needed, scrape the solution and tough stains with a plastic spatula or wooden spoon. Wipe away the loosened debris.
  7. Wipe down and Reassemble: Wipe away any remaining residue and the interior of your oven cavity with a damp cloth. Return your oven racks and accessories to the oven.
  8. Enjoy a freshly cleaned oven!
