Results are In for Kelly’s Cookie Challenge
Teams are already asking to sign up for next year’s limited fourteen spots and three guest judging positions for Kelly’s Cookie Challenge at ABW Appliances Taste of Luxury Showroom. ABW’s charity cooking challenge has become a heartfelt community night filled with hope and inspiration. Returning guests greeted each other with warm embraces and playful banter before the official start of the baking. The rules were simple but challenging. Each team had ninety minutes to bake five dozen cookies.
The teams manned their baking station, tied their aprons, and raced to grab their ingredients. Then to add spark to the night, the Wheaton Fire Rescue Squad came through the front door. No worries they were not there to put out fires or rescue any bakers but to show up and support their team The Cookie Squad. Other teams were competing on behalf of Special Olympics, March of Dimes, JP Home, Coalition to Salute America’s Heroes, Alzheimer’s Awareness, St. Judes’ Children Hospital, and so many others. These teams were baking with a lot of heart and hoped to win for their chosen charity.
CREATIVE NAMES AND DESIGNS
The teams were creative with their team names, decorations, and recipes. Here are a few: Pinnacle Shakers and Bakers, Bake My Day, Fire & Icing, The Cookie Wookies, and Show Us Your Cookies. The judges must have had a hard time choosing the winner. There were snickerdoodle cookies with a caramel filling; chocolate dipped “family secret” recipe with orange zest, a doughy lemon cookie, french macaroons, and cookies that looked like art. There was lots of milk to go with the cookies, and The Show Me Your Cookies Team mixed it up by presenting their cookie with an optional New Orleans flavored beverage.
The task of selecting the award-winning cookie was put in the hands of well-known judges who graciously donated their time to this worthy cause: Lauren Katz winner of ABC’s The Great Holiday Baking Show, B.Frye public figure B.frye@FoodDudeUSA, and Emily Worth of LADC L’Academie de Cuisine.
After several hours and the baking of 840 tasty cookies, the 2016 results were ready. The teams had access to Viking, Bosch, Thermador, Kitchen Aid, BlueStar, Jenn -Air, Dacor, Sub-Zero, Electrolux, Miele, Gaggenau, American Range, and Wolf live vignette kitchen displays. They were able to use induction cooktops as a melting station. These were dream kitchens for these bakers to enjoy for one night for a good cause and a fun fight for the best cookie.
The winning cookie, chocolate chip cookie topped with potato chip sprinkles, baked by Case Designs. They chose Home Stretch, a nonprofit in Northern Virginia that empowers homeless families to receive the $12,000 donation. New this year was a People’s Choice Award that went to last year’s winner Bake My Day and a banner award that was won by Show Me your Cookies.
